Dr Richard Kozlowski helps to rebuild smiles

ADHF’s Rebuilding Smiles program supports people who have experienced domestic and family violence, providing pro-bono dental treatment. We spoke to Dr Richard Kozlowski from Leederville Dental about his volunteering experience.

Helping to heal smiles

A long-held commitment to volunteering has seen Dr Jonathan Lo give back to the community in more ways than one. Now, as the co-owner and principal dentist of Maylands Dental Centre, he’s offering up his practice for Healing Smiles’ screening and emergency-treatment days.

A Future in Oral Medicine

With a distinct shortage of Oral Medicine specialists in WA, it’s an excellent time to consider specialising in this varied and rewarding field.

Oral Medicine via Telehealth

Telehealth in dentistry is now acceptable clinical practice. Due to service restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, dentists have been obliged and continue to triage and manage patients over the phone or video call (virtually).

Clinical Challenges in Oral Medicine & Pathology

Lumps are a common manifestation of pathology involving the palatal tissues. These range from salivary gland tumours such as pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma or adenoid cystic carcinoma to locally aggressive vascular neoplasms such as Kaposi sarcoma, and haematolymphoid malignancies of either lymphoid, plasma cell, histiocytic/dendritic or myeloid origin. Clinical differential diagnosis is complicated by overlapping clinical presentations which include raised soft tissue lumps, often taking on a blue/ purple appearance, with variability in symptoms and clinical onset.
